We Asked the Doctors at Academy of Dental Resources to tell us more about xylitol. They were happy to oblige with answers to the following frequently asked questions:

Xylitol: Frequently Asked Questions

What is xylitol?
Xylitol is a naturally occurring sweetener found in many fruits, and it is a safe and delicious FDA-approved sugar substitute that can help prevent cavities and plaque build-up.

Why makes 100% xylitol gum special?
Xylitol inhibits the ability of the cavity-causing bacteria (Streptococcus mutans) present in your mouth to adhere to the surfaces of your teeth, which in turn interferes with the bacteria’s ability to form dental plaque. Xylitol also reduces the acid producing potential of the bacteria, which some health professionals believe is the leading cause of tooth decay.

Does xylitol reduce the risk of cavities?
Yes. Studies have shown as much as an 80% reduction in tooth decay for xylitol users over an extended period of time.

Who should use 100% xylitol chewing gum?
Xylitol can be used by anyone who is concerned with fighting dental decay and dental plaque. Children should begin using xylitol gum as soon as they are old enough to chew gum safely and responsibly. Expectant mothers (and any relatives who will have contact with the newborn) should begin chewing the gum during pregnancy to reduce the chance that they will pass on “bad bacteria” to the newborn child through sharing food or kissing. An ongoing study found that significantly fewer cavities occurred in the children when their mothers chewed 100% xylitol sweetened gum during and after pregnancy.

How often should I use xylitol gum?
Best results are achieved when the gum is chewed 3 to 5 times per day, for at least 5 minutes, after each meal or snack and before bedtime.

Are there other advantages to chewing 100% xylitol gum?
Yes. Chewing xylitol gum may reduce bad breath. Studies have also shown that chewing xylitol gum can reduce ear infections in children by up to 40%. If your child suffers from frequent ear infection, you may further reduce his or her risk by using a xylitol nasal wash.

If I use xylitol, is it okay to brush and floss less frequently, or to stop using fluoride?
No. It is important to maintain a good oral hygiene routine of brushing and flossing regularly. Chew xylitol gum to enhance and improve your oral health. Don’t use it as a replacement for routine care. And be sure to continue to use other health care products—like fluoride—that are recognized as effective tools against tooth decay.

Is xylitol safe to use?
Yes. Our bodies normally produce about 15 grams of xylitol each day. There should be no side effects when you use 4 to 12 grams of xylitol as directed each day. People who exceed 30 grams per day may experience some lower gastrointestinal discomfort (osmotic diarrhea) for a short period of time while their bodies adjust to the increased amount of xylitol.

These recommendations are general guidelines and are not intended to replace regular check-ups, your health care provider’s advice, or other health maintenance practices that your doctor may have prescribed. Please consult with your dentist or other health care practitioner for further recommendations specific to your personal dental and health concerns. As with any products, use common sense and avoid giving gum and mints to infants, small children, or anyone else for whom these products may pose a choking hazard.
